June 20 Blondie Comic -- Johnny Hart reference

I love it when the comic strip artists play tribute to each other.

I read the StarTribune on a daily basis. This week Jan Eliot, who draws the Stone Soup cartoon strip, has included Jeremy's mom from "Zits," Elly from "For Better or For Worse," Alice from "Dilbert," and Cathy from "Cathy." All of the characters were invited to attend Aunt Joan's baby shower. Once in awhile, I've seen characters from "Funky Winkerbean" and "Crankshaft" visiting one another is shared story lines because Tom Batiuk is involved in both strips. I've also seen Mad Magazine's Tom Richmond's caricature of Barbara Steisand in a "Pearls Before Swine" strip. However, characters from one strip appearing in another strip is unusual.

I noticed in today's Argus Leader that the parents of Jeremy in "Zits" are named Walt and Connie. I miss the cartoon strips "Born Loser," "Nancy" (featuring Nancy and Sluggo,) "Donde," and especially the artwork of Tom Ryan, who drew "Tumbleweeds." My Grandpa, who is 89, still talks about the cartoon strips "Barney Google" and the "Katz 'N Jammer Kids." He said kids used to sing a song that went: "Barney Google and his goog, goog, googley eyes." I wonder if the search engine, Google, has copyrighted the song for an advertising jingle. I doubt it.
