Defend Science With Your Art (Attention Editorial Cartoonists!!!)

Science Idol contest -- and what a worthwhile contest it is.

I'm forwarding these links to my editorial-minded pals and the bonus is that Kal (Kevin Kallaugher) is a celebrity judge and one prize is one of his books - signed. Some of us local cartoonists have been admirers and in awe of Kal's work for awhile -- especially after doing some research on him.

Kal is a very unassuming guy. I wanted him to look at my portfolio during the 2001 AAEC convention in Washington DC. However, twenty to thirty aspiring cartoonists were standing in line to do likewise. He was the most sought-after cartoonist for advice at the convention. Although he is short in stature, he is big on talent. Rob Rogers, of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette told me that if I wanted to know how to truly draw caricatures, I needed to study the work of Kal. Mike Ramirez, formerly of the Los Angeles Times, told me Kal is the most skilled writer in political cartooning. I can't understand why he has never won the Pulitzer.

Man, his caricatures in the Economist are outstanding.

He just sounds/looks like a very neat and intersting person to know -- involved in very worthwhile issues/projects.
